Investigating collaborative drawing as an inclusive practice in Architectural education at NTU
This research was conducted at Nottingham Trent University within the Architecture Department of the School of Architecture Design and the Built Environment. It consisted of a two-day workshop run in conjunction with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). The 16 student participants were joined by 4 SPAB scholars, a SPAB scholarship officer and a SPAB scholarship graduate. The SPAB members provided a guiding voice for the participants and assisted in facilitation over the course of the two days. The research collected and analysed in this report was conducted by two members of staff from the Architecture Department and 4 second-year student research assistants. The student research assistants were awarded bursaries under the Scholarship Projects for Undergraduate Researchers (SPUR) programme.
The first day consisted of a site visit to the ruins of St. John’s church in Colwick, where participants carried out a building survey and collaborated on drawing plans, sections and elevations. The second day of the workshop was focused on individually and collaboratively creating a design for an intervention into the church ruins. Following this, data was collected by means of a focus group, survey, and researcher observation notes, and then analysed thematically.
